OLR: Hollywoodland (2006)

Affleck is decent and the '50s production design is excellent, but this isn't a Zodiac. (7/10)

OLR: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

The long-lost son, the aliens and Harrison Ford's advancing years didn't bother me as much as I was expecting, but the excessive CGI was very distracting. (7/10)

d. Steven Spielberg

Guest OLR: Crank: High Voltage (2009)

The climax is weak but overall it's better than the first, thanks to Mike Patton's score and brilliant usage of REO Speedwagon. (6/10)

d. Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor

24 April 2009

OLR: Clerks II (2006)

A predictable story arc (with the notable exception of the man and his donkey) combined with the endless jibber-jabber of the original flick. (6/10)

d. Kevin Smith

22 April 2009

OLR: Jersey Girl (2004)

More or less, a by-the-numbers Hollywood heartwarmer. (6/10)

d. Kevin Smith

OLR: Gigli (2003)

Holy crap, what a train wreck. (3/10)

d. Martin Brest

20 April 2009

Guest OLR: Carrie (1976)

This doubles as an effective horror film and an adaptation superior to the source material. (7/10)

d. Brian de Palma

19 April 2009

OLR: Interview with the Vampire (1994)

Like Twilight, but for grown-ups. (9/10)

d. Neil Jordan

18 April 2009

OLR: Run Fatboy Run (2007)

Just a barely better than the average romantic comedy that it really is due to Simon Pegg. (6/10)

d. David Schwimmer

16 April 2009

OLR: Good Will Hunting (1997)

Abused tough guys just need one cry while hugging Mork from Ork to fix their life. (5/10)

d. Gus Van Sant

13 April 2009

OLR: An Evening with Kevin Smith (2002)

Smith's an affable, easy-going, damned good speaker and the no-BS descriptions of behind-the-scenes Hollywood made the 3.75 hours of him talking worth a watch. (7/10)

d. J.M. Kenny

12 April 2009

OLR: Hercules (1997)

I wish Disney would mine mythology more often (though the disney-fied loving parent/husband Zeus is kind of hard to swallow). (7/10)

d. Ron Clements & John Musker

09 April 2009

OLR: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

A treat for fans, no doubt, but pretty much just Mallrats 2 to me. (6/10)

d. Kevin Smith

07 April 2009

Guest OLR: Obsession (1976)

Vertigo, chopped in half and crawling slowly towards an ending that isn't quite worth waiting for. (5/10)

d. Brian de Palma

05 April 2009

OLR: Twilight (2008)

Slightly better than the book with some interesting photography, but just a scuff on the shoe of Near Dark as far as vampire romance goes. (5/10)

d. Catherine Hardwicke
